When you’re investing in custom website design services, it’s common to wonder what that process actually looks like. A lot of agencies talk about beautiful design, seamless functionality, and websites that convert.
And if you’re new to the world of custom web design, you could see all of that and be like, “okayyyy, but what does that actually look like day to day?”
It can feel confusing, overwhelming, and you might even be left wondering how involved you’ll need to be, how long it will take, or whether the process will feel as polished as the final product.
That’s why here at Studio Adagio we want to go beyond “we’ll design you a beautiful website” and show you what truly happens behind the scenes, including the people involved, the process you’ll walk through, and what your experience as a client will really feel like!
At Studio Adagio, we believe great web design is built on clarity, collaboration, and intentional strategy, so instead of keeping things vague, we’re pulling back the curtain to show you exactly what it’s like to work with us!
Whether you’re ready for a fast, focused design sprint or a fully custom multi-page website, here’s how our custom website design services work.
Custom Website Design Services with Studio Adagio
The first place we always start with any website design client (regardless of the specific service you choose!) is with a questionnaire that helps us get to know your ideal client, your website wishes, your website dislikes, and your visual style through a Pinterest board.
This questionnaire is where your project actually begins. We’re learning:
✔️ Who your ideal client is and how they search for you
✔️ What you love (and don’t love) about websites you’ve seen
✔️ The visual direction you’re drawn to
✔️ The pages and functionality you need
✔️ Any branding that already exists, or needs to be created first
If branding isn’t finalized yet, no worries! Both of our website design services can be paired with a branding project first, so your visuals, voice, and website all come together cohesively.
Some private practice clinicians come in with a clear vision already Pinterest-boarded and ready to go. Others come in only knowing, “I just know I hate my current site.” Both are a great starting point!
Once we have what we need from you, the way your project unfolds depends on the website design service that you choose, and for that, you have two options:
Custom Website Design Option 1: VIP Website Day
Our VIP Website Day is designed for clinicians with lower page needs or newer businesses who want a fully custom website without a multi-week wait.
Think of this as your entire website, designed and developed, in a single business day.
What the Experience Looks Like:
Once your VIP day is scheduled and we have everything we need (login details to your platform of choice, domain purchased, etc.), our Studio Manager sends over an estimated day-of timeline so you know exactly when to expect things throughout the day.
Here’s what’s happening behind the scenes before your VIP day even begins:
Our team has already built out wireframes and mockups of your entire site, input any existing branding, and set up “shell” pieces like your headers, footers, and logo placement. This means when your VIP day officially kicks off, we’re not starting from scratch, we’re already ahead of schedule.
Here’s what happens on the actual day:
You’ll get an email letting you know we’re kicking things off and when to expect updates. From there, our team begins development immediately onto a staging website. Unlike some VIP day processes, we don’t send homepage mockups first, the first time you’ll see your website is your actual website, live on a staging domain.
Once it’s ready, we send the full site over for your review. You can click through it as normal, buttons are linked, and both mobile and desktop versions are complete. (SEO isn’t part of this stage yet, that comes a little later!)
While you review, our team takes a well-earned mini lunch break. You’ll typically have about an hour to send over your feedback! Once we receive it, we get to work on revisions right away, and this is also when we begin SEO optimization and page speed testing behind the scenes.
You’ll then receive your website with revisions and SEO fully implemented. Your designer will continue tying up any last-minute details and checking back on the revisions doc throughout the day to make sure changes are made as quickly as possible. This is also when we connect Google Search Console and Google Analytics!
By the end of day, you’ll receive your final “website is live” email, complete with offboarding information and launch graphics to celebrate and share!
Custom Website Design Option 2: Custom Website Design (3–4 Week Timeline)
Our standard custom website design service is for clinicians who want a fully custom website of up to 10 pages, with a bit more time built in for creative direction and review.
What the Experience Looks Like:
Just like with VIP Day, this can be paired with a branding project first. Once branding is complete, we move straight into wireframing.
If you’re providing your own website copy, we’ll need that finalized before we begin the design process. If we’re writing your copy for you, you’ll receive the draft copy alongside your homepage wireframe.
Where Custom Website Design and VIP Day really differ is the phased, collaborative approach to the design process.
Phase 1:
Your designer begins wireframing your entire website (up to 10 pages), and within about a week, you’ll receive your homepage wireframe. This is a PDF mockup, so nothing is clickable yet, but it gives you a clear visual of the creative direction: does the layout flow the way you want, do the colors feel right, does it capture the vibe you’re going for?
Phase 2:
From here, we typically go through a round of revisions, which takes another few days. Once you approve the homepage, development begins! This usually lines up nicely with when your copywriting is being finalized too, whether that’s you polishing your own draft or approving ours.
Within one to one and a half weeks, your full website will be sent over for review. This is on a staging site, both desktop and mobile are built out, and buttons are linked (SEO isn’t complete just yet). You’ll typically have around four days to review and send feedback.
Phase 3:
We go through another round of revisions and send the full website back to you for a second full review. While you’re reviewing, our team is completing SEO work and requesting access to your Google Analytics and Google Search Console so we can get everything connected.
Once we receive your final approval, we begin building your launch graphics and upload everything to your client folder. After that, your website goes live, and your offboarding materials are sent your way!
Common Questions About Custom Website Design Services
Do I need a custom website if I already have one?
Having a website and having a website that actually works for you are two different things! If your current site doesn’t reflect your brand, isn’t optimized for your ideal client, or was built from a template that’s limiting your growth, a custom website design service can be a game changer.
At the end of the day, a custom website isn’t just about looking good, it’s about creating a strategic tool that supports your practice!
What’s the difference between the VIP Website Day and the standard custom website design service?
The biggest differences are timeline and process! VIP Day is built for speed – your entire site is designed, developed, and launched in a single day, with the behind-the-scenes wireframing already done before your day even begins. It’s best for clinicians with lower page needs who want to move fast.
Our standard custom website design takes 3–4 weeks and includes a homepage wireframe review before development, giving you more time to weigh in on creative direction along the way. It’s best for practices needing up to 10 pages or who want a more phased, collaborative process.
Do I need branding before I can start on my website?
Not necessarily! Both of our website design services can be paired with a branding project first if you don’t already have one in place. If your branding is already finalized, we simply input it and get straight to work on wireframes (or your VIP day shell pieces).
Can I DIY my website design?
Technically, yes. But practically it depends on your time, tech comfort, and how much you want your website to work for you rather than just exist.
DIY website builders have come a long way, but custom website design is what allows your site to be fully tailored to your ideal client, your brand, and your SEO goals from the ground up, rather than working within a template’s limitations.
If you’re leaning towards DIY for now, here’s a breakdown of DIY vs. custom website designto help you decide what’s right for your practice!
How to Know Which Custom Website Design Service Is Right For You
If you know you’re ready to invest in custom website design services but aren’t sure which route to take, here’s some more guidance to help you decide:
Option 1: DIY Your Website
⭐️ Best for: clinicians who have time, tech comfort, and the bandwidth to learn a platform and build it themselves.
If you enjoy a hands-on approach and don’t mind a learning curve, DIYing your website with a builder can be a solid starting point, especially for brand-new practices still figuring out their offerings. Just know that a DIY site often means revisiting design, copy, and SEO down the road as your practice grows.
Option 2: VIP Website Day
⭐️ Best for: newer businesses or clinicians with lower page needs who want a fully custom website without a multi-week commitment.
If you’re ready to hand the process over to a professional team but don’t need a large, multi-page site, VIP Day gives you a completely custom, fully built website in a single day, wireframed and prepped in advance so nothing feels rushed on your end.
Option 3: Custom Website Design (Up to 10 Pages)
⭐️ Best for: established practices needing a more robust site with multiple pages and more built-in time for creative direction.
If your private practice website needs more than a handful of pages, or you want the chance to review and weigh in on your homepage direction before full development begins, our standard custom website design gives you that structured, collaborative timeline.
At the end of the day, the “right” custom website design service isn’t about choosing the most expensive or elaborate option, it’s about choosing the process that fits your timeline, your page needs, and where your practice is right now.
Whether you’re ready for a one-day design sprint or a fully custom multi-page site, the most important thing is choosing a team who understands private practice clinicians and building a website that actually works as hard as you do.
